October is Eczema Awareness Month

Eczema is one of the most common skin conditions we see, especially now with all of the hand washing due to COVID.  The cause of eczema is unclear and multifactorial (genetics, skin barrier defect, immune defects, and the microbiome).  There is no cure and gentle skin care should be a lifelong habit if you have eczema prone skin.

If you have eczema or dry skin follow this simple skin care regimen:

  • All skin care products should be fragrance free, dye free, and hypoallergenic.
  • Only use lukewarm water for bathing and washing.
  • Dilute bleach baths help decrease inflammation and bacteria that eczema prone skin is more susceptible to.
  • Immediately after bathing or washing hands pat the skin dry and while still damp apply a think moisturizer cream or ointment.
  • Look for active ingredients in your skin care products such as Ceramides and Lipids to help repair the skin barrier.
